The arid landscape contains many settlements with white houses, barley fields, and chortens. The colorful prayer flags stand out beautifully against the landscape. The trek is not particularly difficult, with the highest point at 3,800 meters. Upper Mustang is best hiked in spring and autumn when the temperature is very comfortable. It can get very cold here in winter.

Tamang Heritage

During this alternative trek, you will discover the ancient Tibetan lifestyle combined with picturesque landscapes. The area you explore is connected to Tibet, and the routes were once used by salt traders from Tibet. Manaslu

The Manaslu Circuit starts in Arughat Bazar, from where you follow the Budhi Kandagi River. The trail passes through small Gurung villages, which are still supplied by mule caravans.

The path ascends at Lho to over 3000 meters, where the vegetation becomes drier. Tibetan influences are clearly visible here, with mani walls, prayer wheels, and several monasteries. At Samagaun, at 3500 meters, you can acclimatize at the Manaslu base camp. From Samdo, the gradual ascent to the Larkya La Pass at 5160 meters begins. The climb rewards you with an unforgettable panorama, offering views of peaks over 7000 and 8000 meters and the mountain range bordering Tibet. The trail descends quickly, and the temperature begins to rise.

Tsum Vallei

The first part of this trek follows the same route as the Manaslu Circuit. After Thangurmu, the trail ascends through a wild forest into the Lower Tsum Valley, an area that was accessible only from Tibet for centuries. This valley is inhabited solely by Tibetans who still live according to ancient Buddhist practices. The valley contains several unique monasteries and the large Buddhist nunnery, Rachen Gompa. A long and steep climb leads into the Upper Tsum Valley, which suddenly opens up here. The Ganesh Himal becomes visible, and you stay overnight with local families and in monasteries. The monks and nuns serve Tibetan tea and share stories about their daily lives.

At the end of the valley, over 3700 meters high, lies the impressive Mu Gompa monastery. This monastery has traditionally served to protect the Tsum Valley. You can also stay overnight at Mu Gompa.
